Relentless
“Hannah,” System demands.
Choosing deafness, I paint; red body, black spots, sleek metal now alive. A crimson cyclone swirls, bristles bleeding into water.
“Hannah.” One minute clockwork.
Buttons glow softly; blue, green, then amber. The drone animates.
I stoop level. “There, little guy, you’re looking wonderful to fly tomorrow, yeah?” Happy chirps fade toward the hangar.
“Hannah, respond.”
“What!?” I scream.
“Observe the western desert,” System’s dispassionate reply.
“Why!? I’ve seen it. All of it. There’s nothing there! There never will be. I have seen the western fucking desert, I have seen too much sand, too much dust, too much lifeless, lonely, nothingness.”
